'Joy that he has lived' the focus of O'Herlihy funeral

Hundreds of mourners including President Michael D. Higgins have gathered for the funeral Mass of the late broadcaster Bill O'Herlihy.

O'Herlihy, who retired as an RTE sports broadcaster after the World Cup last year, passed away at his home in Dublin on Monday at the age of 76.

He will be laid to rest at Shanganagh Cemetery after 11.30am Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Foxrock.

Among the mourners in attendance are Ministers Richard Bruton and Heather Humphries, former Ireland international Ray Houghton and O'Herlihy's former broadcast colleagues John Giles and Eamon Dunphy.

The Mass is being celebrated by Fr Tom O'Keeffe, who said: "We are all here to share the grief of the family.

"However, the main focus is not grief, but gratitude, not darkness but light, not sadness because he is gone, but joy that he has lived."
