Elderly couple hospitalised after road accident

An elderly couple have been taken to hospital after a two-car collision on the main Limerick Tipperary road.

The man and woman, understood to be aged in their 70s, were travelling on an inbound lane to Limerick when their silver Passat and a dark-grey people-carrier were in collision.

The crash occurred at a traffic lights junction just above the Ballysimon Roundabout shortly after 11am.

Limerick Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene along with two ambulances and gardaí blocked the road on both sides.

Traffic flow has now returned to normal on the outbound lane to Tipperary.

The elderly couple are not thought to have sustained life threatening injuries. They have been brought by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.

The woman driving the people carrier remained at the scene where she was met afterwards by her husband who travelled to the collision site in another vehicle.

The couple embraced and spoke to gardaí about the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The N24 remains closed to inbound Limerick traffic with diversions at the turnoff at Morrison's Pub.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Henry Street garda station on 061 212 400.
