Healy slams Ceann Comhairle in speaking-rights row

A prominent member of the Dáil Technical Group has criticised Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett, saying he had switched position three times on the issue of speaking rights in the Dáil.

Tipperary TD Seamus Healy was speaking in the wake of the suspension of Dáil proceedings yesterday amid a major row over speaking time.

Independent TDs Catherine Murphy, John Halligan and Thomas Pringle were all expelled from the Dáil by Sean Barrett after complaining about how time was being assigned.

Speaking to Tipp FM, Deputy Healy said the Ceann Comhairle's position on this issue has changed repeatedly.

"Over the last 18 months, the Ceann Comhairle has taken three different positions on this issue," he said.

"He has told us Deputy Patrick Nulty was not entitled to be in the Technical Group; he gave the Reform Alliance people separate speaking time and now he has told us they are entitled to be members of the technical group."
