Time for vote on united Ireland after Brexit result, says Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin has said that Northern Ireland's vote to stay in the EU could lead the way to a united Ireland.

The party says the North's vote to reject Brexit indicates that it does not want to sever ties with the Republic.

Sinn Féin held a rally on the issue in Dublin last night.

The party claims that the Good Friday Agreement provides a mechanism for both sides of the Irish border to vote on the issue.

"Fundamentally, they did not want to see a scenario where one part of Ireland was operating within the EU, and another part operating without," said Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy.

"What Sinn Féin want to do is now is start a national debate and a national conversation in terms of what type of Ireland, a united Ireland, would look like.

"And we want all political parties who state as a matter of policy to say they want to see Irish reunification to join that conversation, rather than [issuing] soundbites like 'this isn't the right time'."
