The operator of a boxing club has appeared in court in connection with a major cannabis seizure in the county.

Peter Whelan and his neighbour Raymond Farrell are both facing drugs charges while Mr Whelan is also charged with illegal possession of a shotgun.

At a special sitting of Nenagh District Court, gardaí gave evidence of arresting Peter Whelan of Boytonrath, New Inn at Tipperay Town garda station on Saturday night

When charged and cautioned the father of one made no reply. He is facing two charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent of sale or supply.

The 49-year-old - who the court heard runs the local boxing club in Cashel - also faces a third charge over an illegally held shotgun.

Detective Sergeant Sean Keane objected to bail on several grounds including a possible flight risk.

The court then heard evidence of the arrest of Raymond Farrell, 51, also of Boytonrath. When charged and cautioned at Cahir Garda Station, he replied "no comment" to two counts of drug possession and possession for sale or supply

No bail application was made for him and Judge Gerard Furlong remanded both men in custody to appear before Clonmel District a Court on Tuesday.
