Uncertainty surrounding border control between North and South Ireland

It is too early to tell if a border will be reinstated between the Republic and the North following the UK vote in favour of leaving the EU.

A majority in Northern Ireland voted to remain, in Thursday's referendum.

Former Irish President Mary McAleese has said Ireland is in a unique position: “We will have the land border with Northern Ireland which will be the only land border between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

“One of the joys of the peace process and one of the joys of the great partnership we enjoy with the United Kingdom and the great relationships we enjoy north and south has been to see the melting away of border controls.”
