Early signs indicate a Yes to marriage equality

The first indications from the Marriage Referendum count are showing a strong Yes vote.

Across Dublin the Yes vote is showing up at around two to one, and larger parts of the country are also showing a strong Yes vote.

A formal declaration will not take place until later this afternoon, but it is expected that Ireland will have voted for marriage equality in the coming hours.

Within minutes of boxes being opened this morning, the picture was that a strong Yes vote was cast yesterday.

Across the capital box after box is showing the Yes votes at 2-1, in some cases 3-1 and more, but it is early days and many boxes remain to be tallied.

In Cherry Orchard one box had a 90% Yes vote, another in Ballyfermot had an 85% Yes vote, Sallynoggin boxes had an 80% Yes.

Around the country large Yes votes are also emerging, though not as much as in the capital.

But Donegal, which traditionally votes No, may in fact pass the marriage referendum with a 55% to 60% Yes vote - though that is based on early trends.

Tipperary is also showing a 60-40 to Yes around Nenagh.

From early tallies Yes has about 55% in Mayo, but in the Longford/Westmeath constituency it is showing up 50-50, with a similar pictures from the first boxes in Killarney in Kerry.

Wexford and Waterford are showing Yes majorities from early boxes, while Wicklow so far is showing a 66% Yes vote.

In Cork North West, one of the most traditional constituencies in the country, there is a 55% showing for a Yes vote based on early tallies.
