Waiting list for driving tests now 'unacceptably long'

The waiting list for driving tests has almost doubled in the past two months.

Over 76,000 people are now waiting to be assessed, with the longest wait now at seven months in part of Tipperary and Galway.

According to the Sunday Business Post, the national average is now at three and a half months - a month longer than the target.

Conor Faughnan from the AA said that the test is fundamental to road safety and the situation is deeply unsatisfactory.

"We've been here before," he said.

"About 10 or 12 years ago, the waiting list for driving tests was unacceptably long - and what happens then is people start ignoring the rules.

"So you'll have unaccompanied drivers on the roads, you'll have the gardaí struggling to enforce because of the sheer numbers, and it's just not satisfactory. Citizens are entitled to a better service than that."
