Dublin, Cork and Kildare councils vote to lower property tax

Councillors in Dublin approved a 15% cut to the property tax in the capital this evening, after their Co Cork and Kildare colleagues agreed a reduction of 10% and 7.5%.

Dublin councillors voted by 46 to 12 on a cut of 15% in the current rate of tax on properties within their administrative area - the maximum reduction the councils can choose to make.

A majority of Cork County Council voted to reduce the tax level by 10%, though a 15% reduction was also on the table before being rejected.

Kildare County Council voted to reduce the tax rate by 7.5%, while another 7.5% in will be allocated to projects within the county.

Other councils to vote on reductions today included South Dublin (15%), Wicklow (15%) Westmeath (3%).

A meeting of Cork City Council scheduled for this evening was postponed after members of the People's Convention Group (CPPC) staged a demonstration inside the chamber, protesting the removal of their posters by the council. The meeting resumed a short time later.
