Former Minister Barry Andrews has been selected to run as Fianna Fail's Dublin candidate in the upcoming European elections.

Mr Andrews, saw off opposition from Mary Hanafin, Tiernan Brady and Conor Lenihan to win the nomination

Speaking at the convention, the former CEO of GOAL said: “At such a crucial time for Europe and Ireland, with the impact of Brexit still largely unknown, a strong voice for Dublin is more important than ever."

Mr Andrews, who most recently was Director General of the International Institute of European Affairs, received 340 first preference votes while Ms Hanafin came second with 199 votes. Mr Brady received 191 votes from delegates and Mr Lenihan got 108.

Party Leader Micheál Martin said: “Four formidable advocates for our party have put a huge effort into this selection process and I want to commend them all for what was a tough but respectful campaign. This process has energised the party in the capital and I am confident that we will be in a position to mount a very strong and credible bid for a seat in the European Parliament for Dublin."
