Ruling allows staff on long-term sick leave to build up annual leave

Staff who are on long-term sick leave will be able to build up annual leave from work, from today.

It follows rulings by the European Court of Justice regarding annual leave entitlements during long-term illness.

Minister for Business and Employment Ged Nash explained what the changes mean.

He said: "It will really mean that workers in Ireland will be able to carry over any annual leave that they have built up during a period of long-term sick leave.

"They'll be able to carry that over for a period of 15 months after the sick leave year in question."
