Tight security for funeral of Cork murder victim as search continues for killers

Tight security will be in place next week for the funeral of murder victim Aidan O’Driscoll.

Although the post mortem on the 37-year-old’s body concluded yesterday, his remains can be held up until Monday under the Coroners Act.

His funeral will take place next week amid very tight security given his links to dissident republicanism.

Gardaí continue their hunt for the two men who approached and shot him on Old Commons Road on Wednesday.

Searches are underway for the weapon used in the daring attack.

Mr O’Driscoll had recently returned playing football with Delanys GAA who announced that they were cancelling all activities this weekend as a mark of respect to his family.

Club chairman Brian Twomey expressed deep sadness at his death: “I knew Aidan for about 30 years. He was a terrible nice fella and couldn’t do enough for anyone.”

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses who have not yet spoken to gardaí to come forward.

Superintendent Mick Comyns made a special appeal to anyone with information about three vehicles linked to the murder — a silver Nissan Almera burnt out at Redemption Road, a white Vauxhall Astra van burnt out at Killeens and a red Opel Astra car seen in Killeens.

Gardaí can be contacted at Anglesea Street station on (021) 4522000.
