Minister announces €450m for school building projects in 2015

The Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan has announced that €450m will spent on school building next year.

The spend is part of the €2.2bn investment plan announced in 2012 which was aimed at boosting the number of school places by 100,000 over five years.

Overall, 27,800 permanent places will be created next year, with 3,500 construction jobs coming on stream for building work on the facilities.

Minister O’Sullivan says the focus next year will be on improving and expanding older schools.

She said: "There are a number of older schools where there were real difficulties with the buildings, where clearly there was a need either for significant extension or a new-build.

"We have been able to include 16 of those schools in various places around the country in the programme."
