UN to examine Ireland's rights record

Ireland will be examined on its record on civil and political rights at the UN Human Rights Committee hearing in Geneva this morning.

The Irish State delegation led by Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald will appear before the committe at 11am.

The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission are looking for outstanding issues to be addressed at the hearing.

David Joyce, Acting Chairman, says the question of traveller ethnicity is just one of the matters that needs to be tackled.

Meanwhile, the Immigrant Council of Ireland are hopeful that the meeting will put an end to delays on promised immigration reform of migrant victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.

Hilkka Becker, Senior Solicitor with the Immigrant Council of Ireland says that an independent appeals mechanism for immigration needs to be introduced.

The hearing will be streamed live from Geneva.
