ASGI: Injury to Cork garda in graphic photo 'could happen to any of our members'

The organisation that represents middle-ranking gardaí has published a graphic photo of a member to show the dangers of frontline policing.

The pictured sergeant sustained a serious eye-injury while on duty last year.

He has now lost 75% of the vision in his left eye.

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors paid tribute to the sergeant, who has more than 20 years’ experience, at their annual conference in Trim, Co Meath.

Vice President of AGSI Willie Gleeson says the injured officer wanted to highlight the risks of frontline policing.

"(He) wanted us, simply, to highlight the injury that occurred to him, that can happen to any member of the force, or any of our members, at any time, and I suppose to give an understanding that this is what can happen," he said.

"This is unfortunately the consequences of being out on duty as an emergency worker."
