Employers urged to consider 'transition plans' for transgender employees

Employers are being informed what type of guidelines they need in place to help transgender staff.

More than 40% of transgender workers say they have encountered problems in the workplace due to their identity.

A seminar is taking place today, organised by the Transgender Equality Network and GLEN, to advise employers of the guidelines they should have in place.

GLEN's director of workplace diversity Davin Roche said issues included an approach for human resource managers in particular around how they can support employees who are transitioning from one gender.

"This may include setting up a transition plan with the employee," he said, "discussing how to inform colleagues, what access employees will have to medical leave, use of toilets and rest rooms and so forth."
