Joan Burton plays down Water Conservation Grant concerns

Tánaiste Joan Burton has played down reports that she will need extra staff to help pay the Water Conservation Grant to every home.

Her comments come after it emerged that her Department will need extra civil servants to make sure every home gets the €100 grant.

A letter from the Secretary General of Tánaiste Joan Burton's department to her counterpart at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, obtained by RTÉ News under a Freedom of Information request, warned that the department would need more resources for the Water Conservation Grant (WGC).

Minister Burton said it is natural for departments to speak to each other about the staff they will need to serve the public.

She also said that there will be no trouble in getting the grant to everyone who is entitled to it.

"As far as I'm concerned, having clear plans to do new initiatives, you know, it's fine to talk about a new initiative, [but] we've to deliver it," she said.

"And the letter is just standard correspondence from a department which delivers successfully millions of payments to people throughout Ireland."
