Berkeley balcony passed 2014 inspection
The balcony in Berkeley which collapsed last month – killing six students – passed an inspection less than a year ago, according to reports.
In a story carried today by the , details of an inspection carried out in August 2014 reported the balcony supports as being in "good" condition.
The details are contained in documents released by the City of Berkeley to the paper, which also show the balcony's decks and rails passed inspection. The company which carried out the inspection was not named in the documents.
The report was presented to the Riverstone Residential Group in October 2014, the management company which was later bought by Greystar, who are now responsible for the property.
Another inspection last September criticised the lack of routine inspection in the complex, the reports.
The apartment with the failed balcony was noted to be missing a carbon monoxide detector in the September report, but the balcony was not inspected on that occasion.
Irish students Eoghan Culligan, Niccolai Schuster, Lorcan Miller, Eimear Walsh, and Olivia Burke, and Irish-American Ashley Donohoe, were killed after the balcony they were standing on collapsed while they were attending a 21st birthday party.
Initial findings by investigators suggested the wood was not properly caulked and sealed when the building was being constructed. It is believed the supports were damaged by moisture as a result.
