Thousands protest in support of former Waterford Crystal workers

Thousands of people took part in a protest in Waterford City this afternoon in solidarity with the former Waterford Crystal workers who are still awaiting their pensions.

Last year, the European Court of Justice ruled that the Irish state is in breach of its obligations under the terms of the EU Insolvency Directive to ensure that employees receive sufficient pension entitlements.

The case is currently before the High Court and is listed for hearing next January.

The Unite trade union says they are engaged with the Labour Relations Commission to resolve the issue and give the former workers their payments.

Former worker Ray Kelly told WLRFM News he was one of the lucky ones who got his pension, but was protesting for his friends who did not.

"I got out on early retirement, so I was one of the lucky ones," he said.

"I feel angry for them that they should have got what they have deserved, and an awful lot more."
