Supermarket chain Tesco has created 104 new jobs with the opening of its newest store in Cork this morning.

The 32,000 sq ft outlet in Ballincollig, which opened its doors at 8am, will employ a total of 125 people, most from the local area, and brings to 147 the number of stores in its Irish network.

Irish Olympic sprint legend, Derval O'Rourke, will cut the ribbon on Tesco Ballincollig later, and kick-start the ‘Tread-milling for Temple St’ fundraiser - Tesco’s new charity of the year.

The brand will also announce a community fund, which it said will help local charities, and a new surplus food diversion project to help charities in need of food.

The new store, which is located in Ballincollig town centre, has 32,000 square feet of net retail space and over 300 covered car parking spaces.

It has an extensive range of fresh food including a butcher, fish counter and bakery, and hundreds of locally produced products including Ballincollig-based firms Healy’s Honey and O’Keeffe’s Bakery, as well as Ballincollig-founded Denise’s Delicious Gluten Free Bakery.

It also features a pizza counter, salad bar and a sandwich bar.

Tesco now employs nearly 15,000 people nationally and over 1,100 in Co Cork.

Today's jobs boost is the first of a string of significant jobs boosts for Ballincollig over the coming weeks.

Boots Chemist opened in the town earlier this week creating several new jobs and fast-food giant McDonalds is expected to create another 60 jobs when it opens its under construction restaurant in the town centre soon.
