Cooper 'humbled' by support after being stabbed in Dublin

Dublin senior footballer Jonny Cooper is out of hospital after he was stabbed early this morning.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital for treatment and has tweeted his thanks after being released this afternoon.

Cooper's club Na Fianna confirmed that the defender had been injured in a tweet sent earlier today.

"We can confirm that Johnny Cooper was injured in an incident that is under Garda investigation," the Glasnevin-based club wrote.

"We would like to wish him a speedy recovery."

A garda spokesperson confirmed that they were investigating a stabbing incident which occurred on Dorset St Upper in the city at around 5.30am this morning.

"A male in his mid-20s was injured in this incident and is currently receiving treatment in the Mater Hospital," the spokesperson said.

His injuries were described as 'not life-threatening'.

Cooper, 24, captained the Dublin U-21s to All-Ireland success in 2010 and won both National Football League and All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals with the senior team last year. He was playing club football for Na Fianna last night, who were knocked out of the Dublin SFC by Templeogue Synge Street.

The incident on Dorset St Upper was one of two stabbing incidents in the city in the early hours of this morning.

In a separate incident, another man in his 20s was stabbed in Whitestown Park, Blanchardstown at around 5.15am. He is in a serious condition in Connolly Hospital.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to both incidents.
