Man caught with drugs when out on bail

Gardaí objected to bail being granted to a man caught with a €9,000 stash of drugs on Union Quay in Cork at a time when he was out on bail on an assault charge.

Detective Garda Declan Keane objected to bail being granted to the accused man yesterday at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Detective Garda Declan Keane charged Gabriel Olatunbosun, aged 22, with having MDMA, cocaine, and cannabis for sale or supply to others at an apartment at Dun Na Laoi apartments on Union Quay, Cork, on October 8, 2018.

The young man, who limped to the dock as a result of a recent soccer injury, confirmed that he had entered signed pleas of guilty to the charges against him. Peter O’Flynn applied to have the accused released on bail pending sentence.

Det Garda Keane said the drugs offences dated back to October 8 and that weeks earlier he had sentencing in a case of assault causing harm adjourned from September 19.

Det Garda Keane said he believed that if the accused was released on bail he would commit further crime.

The detective added, “He had certain bail conditions [from the assault case] requiring him to sign on at a garda station on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week but he has not signed on since April 18.”

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin said: “These are fairly serious offences and the likelihood of a prison sentence is fairly high. I will remand in custody until May 17 for sentencing.”

The judge added that because the drugs offences were committed when he was on bail in the assault case, consideration would have to be given to consecutive sentences being imposed.
