53 Irish webcams cast to online site exploiting security gap

There's a stark warning to webcam users here, as a Russian website is broadcasting images from 53 Irish homes which can be seen by anyone online.

Hackers have been able to access live webcams and CCTV systems because owners aren't changing the default passwords that come with gadgets.

The Irish cameras involved feature external home security and animal monitors as well as those inside people's homes.

The website insists it is only trying to raise awareness for people who don't know about the problem.

The Data Protection Commissioner said it has no powers to have the footage removed because the host site is based outside the state.

However it is advising people to ensure they have "robust" passwords in place.

Concerned users can also simply cover the lens of their webcam when not in use.
