Phone calls in du Plantier case taped on purpose, garda claims

A garda claimed that phone calls to and from a key witness in the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder investigation were taped on purpose.

RTÉ's This Week radio programme reported today on an internal garda document, obtained by the programme, in which a garda made a statement that he listened back to tape recordings made by a colleague.

In the 1997 statement, the garda alleged that recording equipment had been connected to a phone in the station for the purpose of recording calls to and from a key witness in the case.

No-one has ever been charged in the Du Plantier case, involving the murder of the 39-year-old French film producer in 1996.

The revelation comes after the Government established a commission of investigation into the alleged taping of conversations in Garda stations over the last number of decades.

Mr Justice Nial Fennelly has been appointed as chair of the Commission, which is expected to cost at least €2m - if it completes its work by the end of this calendar year.
