A doctor is taking a High Court challenge over the introduction of free GP care for children under six.

Dr Yvonne Williams from Shannon in Co Clare claims the scheme places her in an impossible position and could jeopardise her practice.

She said if she signs up to the new contract, she fears it will lead to a dramatic increase in the frequency of visits by children under six, which her practice may not be able to accommodate.

Dr Williams feels it would be unethical to enter a scheme that would compromise patient care.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt will hear the application next Wednesday.
