Community in shock after 'horrific' killing of retired couple

Gardaí are continuing to question a 42-year-old man in relation to the deaths of a retired couple in Donegal.

The bodies of the couple, locally named as former schoolteacher Jimmy and retired nurse Kathleen Cuddihy, were discovered by a builder at their home in Carndonagh yesterday morning.

He described the scene as "just horrific".

A hatchet found at the house is being examined as part of the investigation.

Reporter with Highland Radio in Donegal, Barry White, said that the couple were very popular in the area.

“Jimmy Cuddihy would be really, really well known – a maths teacher for nearly 40 years,” he said.

“I spoke to a lot of locals and they were expressing their shock. A lot of men I spoke to had said that they had been taught by the father of four, he had taught them math or taught them metalwork.”
