Pharmacists urge simple precautions during cold and flu season

Pharmacists are urging people to take precautions to prevent catching colds and flu this Christmas.

The IPU says that washing your hands and controlling stress levels, are some good ways to protect yourself from catching the virus.

Spokesperson with the Irish Pharmacy Union Bernard Duggan, said you should also limit your contact with people who are currently suffering with a cold or flu.

"There are simple, practical measures people can do like washing your hands regularly to prevent the spread of germs; make sure to drink plenty of water during the day to stay hydrated; make sure to keep you immune system strong," he said.

"And if you are in contact with somebody who does have a cold or flu, try to limit contact with the person until their symptoms have disappeared."

The union is also advising people to get the flu vaccination, especially high-risk groups with pre-existing medical conditions.
