Kildare TD joins Right2Water campaign

Independent TD Catherine Murphy and youth organisation We’re Not Leaving have joined the Right2Water campaign.

The anti water charges groups said that it is continuing dialogue with other groups in advance of a mass protest planned to take place outside Dáil Éireann on Wednesday, December 10.

Commenting, Deputy Murphy said: “I believe a large turnout on December 10 will be seen as a powerful act of solidarity which goes to the heart of what a genuine democracy should be”.

The campaign have rubbished claims that water charges are needed to invest more resources in the system.

Campaign spokesperson Brendan Ogle said that if the Government want to re-invest in our water system, there are other ways to do it:.

"Any Government that wanted, sincerely, to address a water problem of losing 41% of its product, or a conservation problem, or any of the problems we've been told are there, and [they] are there, will have stood back from this crisis and would have said: 'Water is part of how we run our country'," he said.

"And what they would have done is they would have established an Irish Water Board, in public ownership, and they would have funded the Irish Water board through progressive taxation."
