The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) says it will consider Junior Health Minister Alex White' request to agree a framework for negociations regarding free GP care for under-6s.

The Cabinet yesterday signed off on the legislation which should be brought to the Oireachtas by the summer.

GPs still have grave concerns over the proposals as they say it will lead to a flood of appointments and an "unworkable" load on doctors.

However, Dr Ray Walley of the IMO's GP Committee says they have been invited to discuss setting up a framework to establish negotiations.

"We will give it serious consideration, we are still asserting our rights as a union - we have a negotiation licence to do this," he said.

"We are making it crystal clear that there are no contract negotiations agreed to, but we will give serious consideration to his request to consider a framework as to how negotiation on a contract might take place."
