Trial of Ibrahim Halawa postponed yet again

The trial of Ibrahim Halawa has been postponed again in Egypt.

The 19-year-old's case was due to be heard in Cairo today – however it has now been put back to June 3.

Ibrahim has been in custody for one year and eight months after being arrested at a mosque in Cairo in August 2013, at a time when protests were taking place in the city.

His family claim he has been beaten and is in a very serious condition, and his sister Somaia is urging the Government here to intervene.

"The Government are being very slow to take that step to ask for Ibrahim's immediate release," she said.

"I urge the Governments here to take a very urgent step and remove Ibrahim from that prison [or] the same prison that he is, but a different section."

In a statement, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, said he would meet with the Egyptian Foreign Minister in New York tomorrow, and was constantly reviewing the State's approach.

He said the decision to reject Ibrahim's application for bail was "disappointing" and he remains "committed to taking all appropriate action."
