A pedestrian aged in his 30s has died after he was knocked down by a Garda patrol car in Co Louth overnight.

A pedestrian died after he was knocked down by a Garda patrol car in Co Louth overnight.

He has been named as 32-year-old Eamon Carroll from Bellurgan.

The incident happened on the Dundalk to Carlingford Road, the R173, at around 1.20am this morning.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) sent a team of investigators to the scene, which is still closed and undergoing forensic collision investigation, with diversions expected to remain in place until at least 10am.

The road has been closed between Bellurgan and Lordship to allow a forensic exam take place and diversions are in place.

GSOC is appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them using the locall number 1890 600 800.
