Parents will be entitled to a report on the strengths and weaknesses of their child's school under new plans by the Department of Education.

The information could range from teaching standards and student achievement to the school's ability to look after pupil's health and well-being.

The Irish Independent reports department officials are working on proposals on the matter.

He said the so-called "league tables" did not give a full picture of each school, that the information was purely based on reports from third-level institutions into where their students come from, and that comparing schools purely on where their graduates went to college was not fair.

"It's not that they're misleading…They just don't capture the full story," he said.

"I think it's unfair to some of the schools if you compare 'school X' with 'school Y' purely on the basis of how many of their graduates or students go on to third-level college."
