The incident occurred at around 3.15pm at Thormac Engineering in the Shannon Industrial Estate. The company provides a plastic injection moulding service.

The two men, aged in their 40s, are understood to have been working at a machine when they were struck by molten plastic.

Three units of the fire brigade from Shannon along with ambulances from Ennis and Limerick were sent to the scene following a report of an explosion.

The pair, whom gardaí say have suffered serious burns, were taken to ambulance to the nearby Irish Coast Guard search and rescue base at Shannon Airport.

From there, they were flown to the burns unit at Cork University Hospital.
