LRC invites union and management for Irish Rail talks

The Labour Relations Commission has invited all sides in the Irish Rail dispute to exploratory talks.

What is being described as "exploratory talks" will take place tomorrow to see if there is a basis for a resolution.

The dispute centres around Irish Rail's decision to implement pay cuts as part of a cost-cutting package, without the workers' agreement.

Unions and management have accepted the invitation to the talks.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe, said: "I welcome the fact that the LRC has intervened at this time and that the invitations to talks have been accepted by the parties to the Irish Rail dispute.

"As I have maintained, the LRC is the appropriate forum in which discussions can, and should, take place, and am hopeful of positive outcome."

The National Bus and Rail Union's General Secretary Dermot O’Leary said: "We understand that this invitation is designed to establish if there is a basis for further discussions around a more comprehensive agenda rather than one which has a disproportionate focus on our members' wages.

"We will engage with the commission on this basis."
