Pat Hickey 'expected to get his passport back and return to Ireland'

Pat Hickey could get his passport back in Brazil today.

Lawyers for the former President of the Olympic Council of Ireland are expecting it to be returned once he pays his €400,000 bail.

A judge decided that he could come home on medical grounds before his trial as part of an investigation into alleged ticket touting at the Olympics.

He was arrested during last summer's Games in Rio, and denies the allegations.

News reporter with the Independent.ie, Cathal McMahon, explains where the bail money has come from.

He said: "The OCI, the Olympic Council of Ireland, said they weren't putting up the bail and a number of other people declined to speak on it, but eventually the Association of the National Olympic Committee offered to put forward the money.

"The money has now been handed over to the authorities in Brazil, and it's expected that once it's been processed, Pat Hickey will be able to get his passport back and return to Ireland."
