Cork homeless family offered house after emotional appeal on radio

A homeless family has received a flood of offers for help after an emotional appeal on Cork radio station 96fm.

Mother-of-two Rebecca Dela Vega Heelan described to Deirdre O'Shaughnessy on the show how she walks the streets each day with her husband and three-year-old son while her six-year-old is in school.

The three share a bedroom in a women-and-children-only B&B allocated by homeless services.

Rebecca's husband sleeps on the streets because there is no hostel available for him.

Listener Lorraine contacted 96fm offering the family use of a cottage in Mallow while other listeners flooded the station with offers of transport and items for Christmas.

"A lovely lady called Lorraine just got in contact there and offered us a place in a cottage in Mallow," said Rebecca.

"Now she said that it's very basic, but I mean it’s a roof over our heads at the end of the day. So thank you very much."

Fragolini School of Dance also offered ballet lessons and a ballet outfit to Rebecca's six-year-old daughter.
