'Distraught' staff turn up for work at Dunnes outlet due for closure

Workers at Dunnes Stores in Gorey, County Wexford, have turned up for work this morning, despite the closure of the retail outlet on Thursday.

Dunnes Stores has been accused of using the outcome of a court injunction, to close the store without notice or explanation to staff or customers.

More than 110 staff were left in limbo when the shop closed without notice on Thursday night.

The trade union Mandate condemned the move after what it described as a "petty dispute".

Mandate's General Secretary John Douglas says it is very unfair on the workers.

Mr Douglas said: "The workers are turning up for work as normal this morning and they are distraught, they are very annoyed.

"Their lives have been turned upside down, they don’t know whether or not they have long-term jobs with Dunnes Stores.

"They are being used as pawns in agame between Dunnes Stores and the landlord, and it's extremely unfair in this day and age that staff can be used in such a way."
