Water-charge protesters asked to give assurances in court

Nine water meter protesters are being asked to give undertakings not to obstruct the installation of water meters in North Dublin.

Around 80 supporters crowded into the High Court over claims by meter installers GMC Sierra that they cannot carry out their work due to daily demonstrations.

A roar went up in the packed court room as lawyers for GMC Sierra said they want to stop demonstrators coming within 20 metres of water installation works in North Dublin.

Nine protesters are before the court for allegedly breaching an injunction not to intimidate, harass or obstruct workers installing water meters - a charge which they deny.

Eight of the protesters are represented by solicitor Cahir O'Higgins, who said his clients fear a 20 metre exclusion zone could affect their right to freely associate and express discontent at what they consider is an unfair tax being levied from an organisation that has questions to answer in the context of bonuses.

The court is sitting again around now when they are expected to say if they are prepared to give undertakings to comply with the order.
