A post mortem will be carried out today on the remains of a person discovered in the River Suir in Waterford.

A post mortem will be carried out today on the remains of a person discovered in the River Suir in Waterford.

A member of the public made the discovery yesterday evening.

At about a 5.15pm yesterday a member of the public called emergency services when they spotted a person's remains in the water at Granny in Ferrybank.

A Coast Guard helicopter was launched and directed the river rescue team to the body.

The remains have been removed to Waterford University Hospital Mortuary - where a post mortem will take place later today.

It is not known at this stage if the body is that of a man or a woman.
