'Number of fatalities' at serious blaze in Dublin

Six units of Dublin Fire Brigade are dealing with a serious blaze in Carrickmines.

Several people are believed to have been killed in the fire at a traveller site.

Gardaí said it believed there were “a number of fatalities” after the blaze overnight at a halting in Carrickmines, south of Dublin.

Six units of the fire service and five or six ambulances are on site at the house on the Glenamuck Road.

The alarm was raised at around 4.30am.

Gardaí say there are believed to be a number of fatalities and two adults and two children have been taken to St Vincent's and Tallaght Hospitals, suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Garda Technical Bureau is due to attend the scene this morning.

A Garda spokesman said: “The emergency services have been at scene since approximately 4am this morning. There are believed to be a number of fatalities and two adults have also been taken to St Vincents and Tallaght Hospitals suffering from smoke inhalation.”

Local Labour Party councillor Lettie McCarthy says the family is well known.

She said: “Certainly many people around the community would know lots of the family and certainly know them to see.

“So it’s very sad news and absolutely my thoughts and prayers are with the family. We don’t know yet how many fatalities, there are lots of young children, gorgeous little babies in there, and I suppose we just have to wait for the news.

“It is not the news you want to hear n a lovely autumn Saturday morning.”
