NUJ appeals for 'moral leadership' as INM votes on pension arrangements

Update 2.30pm: The National Union of Journalists have called on the shareholders of Independent News and Media to show "a streak of decency".

Around a hundred current and former staff at Independent News and Media protested outside the companies EGM this afternoon.

It is after INM announced it would no longer be contributing to its defined benefit pension scheme.

Shareholders are likely to pass resolutions that would see INM begin to pay dividends for the first time since the financial collapse.

Irish Secretary of the NUJ Seamus Dooley said: "Now is the time for the shareholders to show moral leadership."

Earlier:

The National Union of Journalists and SIPTU are planning to protest outside an extraordinary general meeting of Independent News and Media's shareholders.

It is over a decision by INM to close the company's defined pension benefit scheme.

The union says the decision is scandalous.

Shareholders in INM will be asked to vote on the issue at this afternoon's EGM in Dublin.

Social Democrats TD Catherine Murphy attended the rally in solidarity of those affected by the cuts to the pension scheme and said: "There must be urgent legislation introduced to ensure that solvent companies are not permitted to cheat people from their rightful pension entitlements”
