Gardai have appealed for witnesses following the death of 19-year-old man in a road traffic collision tonight, writes David Raleigh.

The young man was driving a jeep which was in a collision with a truck, around 6.40pm, on a stretch of the N21 Limerick to Tralee Road, about 2km outside Abbeyfeale.

An 18-year old woman who was also travelling in the jeep is in a critical condition at University Hospital Limerick.

The driver of the truck was not seriously injured gardai said.

Gardai have closed the road pending a detailed technical examination at the scene by a garda forensic collision inspector.

A garda spokesman said they expected the road would remain closed overnight.

Gardai and three fire units attached to Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale remain at the scene.

Diversions have been put in place via Devon Cross and Athea.

A statement released by the Garda press office said: "Gardai are investigating a two vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N21 at Wards Cross on the Limerick side of Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick."

"A 19 year old male was fatally injured when the vehicle he was driving was involved in a collision with a truck. The 18 year old female passenger was seriously injured."

"The male was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed to University Hospital Limerick. The female passenger was taken to University Hospital Limerick with injuries described as critical."

"The driver of the truck was uninjured."

"This stretch of road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place."

"Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Newcastle West Garda Station on 069 20650, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
