A woman in her 70s has died following a traffic accident in Co Roscommon in which four cars and a truck were involved.

A woman in her 70s has died following a traffic accident in Co Roscommon in which four cars and a truck were involved.

The accident occured in the townland of Cloonfree, Strokestown at 1.30p.m. yesterday afternoon.

The woman, the driver of one of the cars, was removed to University College Hospital Galway and she died later in the afternoon. A male passenger in that car, aged in his mid-70s, was removed to UCHG with minor injuries.

The driver of the truck, a man in his early 40s, was taken to Sligo Hospital with minor injuries, while a man and woman who were in another car were taken to Mullingar Hospital with minor injuries.

The occupants of the other two cars were not injured.

The road in the area was closed to facilitate the Garda forensic collision investigators and has now reopened.

Gardaí are seeking witnesses to the collision and anyone with information is asked to contact Castlerea Garda Station on 094 - 9621630, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
