Taoiseach: Monies allocated to Mobility Allowance "remain allocated"

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is promising a new mobility grant scheme that is within the law.

Mr Kenny has come under fire in the Dáil this morning for what has been described as "a scandalous decision" to axe the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant in four months because the Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly said they are illegal.

Around 5,000 people with disability benefit from the schemes.

Disability campaign groups are outraged because of the lifeline that the grants offers.

The Taoiseach has promised the money will still be paid to those who currently get it until a new scheme is devised.

Mr Kenny told the Dáil: "The monies that have been allocated will continue to be allocated, and those people who are in receipt of that this morning will continue for the next four months to receive it.

"You have got to devise a new scheme taking into account the broader capacity of what is happening now and the monies allocated, remain allocated."
