Dog cooked alive in Kildare 'worst case of animal torture'

Investigations have been launched after a dog is believed to have been cooked alive over a fire at the Curragh in County Kildare.

The Staffie dog was found on Monday and was subsequently taken into the care Kildare West Wicklow SPCA, where they named him Tony.

It was only after vets treated him that they realised the darkness on his fur was soot, and that his internal organs had been slowly cooked, leading to his death two days later.

Sally McCaffrey from Kildare West Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spoke to Kfm.

"He must have been hogtied - tied by his feet over a fire - his internal organs had been cooked. He had nervous ticks, and they reckon the brain had also been affected by the fire," she said.

"The sad thing was that he was still alive. Although he went in to veterinary care and they treated him very very well, and he got a lot of love and attention at the end, he had a terrible end to his life."

Volunteers have described it as one of the worst cases of animal torture ever seen.

The dog died yesterday and the incident has been reported to gardaí.

The Animal Rights Action Network was contacted by a donor who is offering a reward, which it is hoped will lead to those responsible being apprehended:

"A lot of people have been hearing about the plight of Tony," said ARAN's John Carmody. …We're hoping that our phones will ring with the information we need to apprehend and possibly convict the person or persons responsible for this vicious and cruel act."
