Make plans: It's Culture Night tonight

Museum lovers can get their fix well into the night tonight, as arts and cultural organisations across the country take part in the ninth annual Culture Night.

Around 1,400 events take place at more than 900 venues, in 36 different regions.

Museums will open late, there are also live music events planned and public buildings - including Leinster House in Dublin - will open their doors to the public.

"It began in 2006 … it originally kicked off and was inspired by similar initiatives in Europe like the European museum night," said Culture Night coordinator, Aimee Vanwylick.

"It started off in Dublin, in Temple Bar mostly, where cultural organisations opened their doors on the night, programming cultural activities for people to explore and experience."

Hundreds of events take place all over the country. In Belfast, an enormous drum circle will kick off the evening from 6.30pm, while in Dublin, RTÉ will be providing music in the streets from the Stephen's Green bandstand to Meeting House Square. Even Leinster House will open its doors for tours and music.

Down south, Cork will host a 'secret' concert by Lisa Hannigan - tickets for which can only be won, not bought - and an outdoor cinema in Fitzgerald's Park, the main feature of which will be a screening of The Commitments from 9pm.

A complete listing of events by area is available on culturenight.ie.
