HIQA report uncovers further problems with Aras Attracta

A new report published following an unannounced HIQA inspection in Aras Attracta has found further problems with the facility.

The care home in Co. Mayo for people with intellectual disabilities was cast into an uncomfortable spotlight last year when it was the subject of a Prime Time documentary which uncovered major shortcomings at the centre.

The latest inspection found problems regarding patient privacy, staffing levels and procedures for evacuating residents in the event of a fire.

And it found that some staff members were "not clear about what constituted abuse".

Paddy Connolly, CEO of Inclusion Ireland said that the first inspection in Aras Attracta was in February 2014 according to the report, meaning that there was a full year before the Aras Attracta story broke on Prime Time.

"I believe there are a number of reports going back over a year on Aras Attracta with over 100 reccommendations," said Connolly.

"And a part of the McCoy investigation is to look into why these recommendations were not implemented," Connolly added.
