Limerick fire fighters rescue man from river

Fire fighters in Limerick rescued a man from the River Shannon this afternoon.

The rescue happened when fire fighters were dispatched to the river at around 1.15pm after a man entered the water near the University of Limerick.

The Shannon-based Coastguard Rescue Helicopter R115 and HSE paramedics also attended and the man was air-lifted to University Hospital Limerick.

The man's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

In the early hours of yesterday morning, fire fighters fought dramatically against gale-force winds and driving rain when a woman was reported in the River Shannon.

The crew from the Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service (LCFRS) rescue boat were dispatched to Steamboat Quay, Limerick City at approximately 11.50pm.

The woman entered the river near the Clarion Hotel where fire fighters located her within minutes after launching their newly purchased rescue boat.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was revived at the scene, but tragically later passed away at University Hospital Limerick.
