Man accused of petrol station robbery takes bail bid to High Court

A man accused of trying to rob a petrol station in Dublin is going to apply for High Court bail amid concerns over his safety while in prison.

John Paul Lennon of St. Anthony's Park, Rialto was one of two people arrested in connection with the attempted robbery last week.

Just before 9pm last Wednesday, two masked raiders armed with knives demanded cash from staff at the ESSO filling station on Usher Quay before leaving empty handed a short time later.

Not long afterwards, Gardaí arrested a man and woman at nearby Thomas Street. Knives and balaclavas were also recovered.

John Paul Lennon and Danielle Kane, a mother of five from Mount Brown, Inchicore were both refused bail when they appeared in court last week.

During his failed bail application Lennon said he was concerned about his safety while in prison.

Today his lawyers indicated their intention to go to the High Court to apply for his release as Gardaí continue to await instructions from the DPP.
