A man is recovering in hospital after he was rescued from a river in Co Clare this afternoon.

A man is recovering in hospital after he was rescued from a river in Co Clare this afternoon.

The alarm was raised at around 2.30pm when a passerby reported seeing a man in the River Fergus close to Ennis town centre.

Emergency services were alerted and a rescue operation quickly mounted.

Two units of the fire brigade, an ambulance and advanced paramedic unit and Gardaí responded to the scene.

Fire service personnel, specially trained in river rescue, located the casualty and brought him safely ashore.

The man was removed to Ennis General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
